The new EP from synthesizer duo, CRYSTAL!
Following their single "You Are a Monster" featuring Matias Aguayo, here is the new EP from Tokyo's cult synthesizer band CRYSTAL. The influence of video games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Ecco the Dolphin is widespread, and the nostalgia for this cartridge classic is reflected in their latest work, "Ecco Funk."Returning as a duo for the first time in three years, CRYSTAL draws inspiration not only from the aquatic world of Ecco the Dolphin but also touches upon the works of William Gibson (specifically, the 1995 film "Johnny Mnemonic" starring Keanu Reeves, rather than the 1981 short story of the same name), carving out their own liquid world within a retro-futuristic cyberspace. The title track, directly influenced by these games, opens with dolphin-like high-pitched bursts and an unbelievable bass groove from an unbelievable bassist. "Ecco Funk" sprinkles funky splashes of keyboard solos within its lyrics, expressing a desire to play Sega Mega Drive's masterpieces once more."Do It Again," featuring the new generation of electric jazz artists Niels Broos and Vincent Ruiz, races along with a disco bassline. Sparkling arpeggios and Zhuangzi's English narration create a sound trip that swims through cyberspace."Genesis Jam," based on an 11-minute space jam that gained attention at RBMA with Miyake's participation, is a striking piece that contrasts soft, dramatic chord sections with acid synths. The reappearing unbelievable bass solo and Miyake's valiantly battling chopper bass and vocoder evoke the influence of Jean-Michel Jarre from his Zoolook era or Herbie Hancock from Future Shock. The EP concludes with "Crystal Gates," a track adorned with head-nodding, intense synthesizers and crystalline melodies echoing through space, marking a slightly funkier end to CRYSTAL's latest release.CRYSTAL's "Ecco Funk" is not just about sound; it reaffirms the synth duo's dedication to worlds of the past. While 16-bit consoles may be long gone, "Ecco Funk" captures the golden age of synthesizers with a fresh perspective, breathing new life into its nostalgia.
