Founder Paul Lamfrom of Columbia Sportswear was managing a shirt manufacturing factory in Germany.
He emigrated with his family from Germany to Oregon, USA in 1938.
When starting his business in America, Lamfrom purchased the rights to a small hat wholesale business.
Named after the Columbia River near the office, the company was called Columbia Hat Company.
Lamfrom's second daughter, current chairperson Gert Boyle, supported the family business from her teens.
Later, Gert's husband Neil Boyle, who became Columbia's president, also joined the family business in 1950.
In 1960, to expand further, the company began producing its own products.
Columbia Hat Company merged with Columbia Manufacturing Company, a ski glove manufacturer, and renamed itself Columbia Sportswear Company.
