SKYE is a special band formed by Shigeru Suzuki (guitar), Rei Ohara (bass), Tatsu O Hayashi (drums), and Masataka Matsutoya (keyboards), who have been leading Japan's music scene since the dawn of rock. Reuniting in 2019, they gained attention as the "world's oldest major new band," and successfully held their first solo tour in 2022. The title "Collage" signifies a creative technique of constructing works by combining various materials with different properties and logics. The album features 14 tracks, including new songs based on 70s music, with lyrics and compositions contributed by each member, as well as "radio," which became a topic as the FM COCOLO spring campaign song in 2023. The jacket features an illustration and a collage of diverse materials, symbolizing the title "Collage," creating an impressive design. The Billboard Live shows scheduled from July to August are part of the record release tour, with support musicians Hikari Ichihara (tp), Kaori Kobayashi (sax), and Itsumi Komano (tb) joining as a "girls" horn section, and many songs from the new album are expected to be performed. Tickets are limited, so please check early. ◆SKYE Profile (in alphabetical order) ■Rei Ohara (Ohara Rei) Born November 17, 1951, in Tokyo. Started playing piano at age 3. While attending Aoyama Gakuin High School, formed "SKYE" with Shigeru Suzuki and Tatsu O Hayashi, where he first played bass. Joined "Sadistic Mika Band" in 1972. Later moved to the US and participated in "Ian McLagan Band." Performed with Ron Wood, Keith Richards, Jim Keltner, Bonnie Raitt, and others. Returned to Japan for Ryuichi Sakamoto's tour. Married Ami Ozaki in 1997. Has been actively involved in projects including the rock duo "The Renaissance" with Gota Yashiki, and collaborations with Tami Oda, Akiko Yano, Ami Ozaki, among others. Released solo album "Picaresque" in 1988, which was selected as one of the best albums of the year by rock magazines. ■Shigeru Suzuki (Suzuki Shigeru) Born December 20, 1951, in Tokyo. Met Haruomi Hosono in an amateur band circle and joined "Happy End" in 1969. Known for delicate yet bold guitar work. After "Happy End" disbanded, formed "Caramel Mama" (later renamed "Tin Pan Alley") with Hosono, Hayashi, and Masataka Matsutoya. Participated in numerous recordings. Started solo activities concurrently. His 1975 solo debut album "BAND WAGON," recorded in LA, received high praise. Formed "Huckleback" after returning to Japan. In 2000, formed "Tin Pan" with Hosono and Hayashi. Has participated extensively in recordings and concerts as a musician and arranger. ■Tatsu O Hayashi (Hayashi Tatsu) Born May 21, 1951. From Tokyo. Started playing drums at age 12 influenced by his older brother. Began activity with Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, and Masataka Matsutoya in "Caramel Mama" from 1972. Later renamed "Tin Pan Alley," working with artists like Yumi Arai, Yoshitaka Minami, Minako Yoshida, Ayumi Ishida, Eiichi Ohtaki, Akiko Yano, Tadashi Kosaka, Izumi Yukimura, and others. Active in bands such as "Parachute" and "Aragon" in the 1970s, paused music activities in the mid-1980s, and resumed in 1996 with "Arai Yumi The Concert with old Friends." Currently participates in works and tours with Taeko Ohnuki, Akiko Yano, Ami Ozaki, and others. Released his first book "Tokyo Backbeat Tribe – Tatsu O Hayashi Autobiography" in February 2020. ■Masataka Matsutoya (Matsutoya Masataka) Born November 19, 1951, in Tokyo. Started piano lessons at age 4. Graduated from Keio University in 1974. Began band activities during university, forming the legendary group "Caramel Mama" with Hosono and Hayashi. After "Tin Pan Alley," became involved in many sessions as a player. Married Yumi Arai in 1976. As an arranger and producer, has worked with many artists including his wife Yumi Matsutoya, Ami Ozaki, Seiko Matsuda, Yuzu, and Ikimono Gakari, also directing and producing concerts.
