絵の中で柳（ウィロー）が描かれていることから「ウイローパターン」と呼ばれ、
中国の悲恋の物語が絵のモチーフに。
高貴な美しい娘と位の違う青年は許されぬ恋に最後は死を選び、
それを哀れんだ神様が二人を鳥に変え、永遠の愛で結ばれたという物語。
この物語が世に出た1780年ごろ、シノワズリ（東洋趣味）の流行もあり、
とても高く評価されたそうです。

1890年代から1960年代にかけて多くはアメリカに輸出され、
