Koichi Mitsu, a craftsman with a history of over 100 years, inherits two traditional techniques: "Edo Kimekomi Dolls" and "Edo Festival Dolls." He works on both "Hina Dolls" and "Gogatsu Dolls." A wide range of artisans, from seasoned craftsmen in their 70s to young artisans in their 20s, hone their skills daily, passing on their techniques and spirit to the next generation.
**Third Generation Koichi Mitsu**
Founded in 1920 in the Shitamachi area of Shitaya Takecho, Tokyo, and has been involved in doll manufacturing for over ninety years. The current third-generation master, Koichi Mitsu, was born in Tokyo in 1953 (Showa 28). At 18 years old, in 1971 (Showa 46), he apprenticed under his father, the previous master, Koji Mitsu (Second Generation Shōtama).
In 1988 (Showa 63), he produced a warrior procession based on the "Heiji Monogatari Emaki" (Heiji Scroll) at the Kyoto Prefectural Museum of Culture. In 1997 (Heisei 9), he studied under Eiko Serikawa, a disciple of the Living National Treasure, Goyo Hirata.
In 2000 (Heisei 12), recognizing his numerous achievements, he was certified as a Traditional Craftsman by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. In 2005 (Heisei 17), he was selected as a Tokyo Meister by the Governor of Tokyo.
To date, he has received numerous awards, including the Prime Minister's Award and the Most Excellent Skill Award, and is one of the leading artists in the Edo Kimekomi world.
