[Adachi Market, Central Wholesale Market]
Adachi Market is said to have originated in the Tensho era, focusing on freshwater fish, produce, and rice. The narrow road at the market entrance is the former Nikko Kaido and was once a "Yacchaba" (a bustling marketplace).
The lively shouts of vendors during the early morning auctions and the bustling traffic of "Daihachiguruma" (large two-wheeled carts) that characterized the Yacchaba, eventually led to its relocation from Kawaramachi to Hashidomachi due to changes in traffic and social conditions. It was then established as a central wholesale market, handling both produce and seafood. In 1979, the produce division moved to Iriya in the northwestern part of Adachi Ward, and it is now a market specializing in seafood. I have fond childhood memories of playing inside the market, baseball, kick-the-can, and racing around on carts, often getting scolded by the market staff for playing too much.
