His first official posthumous release, "Celebration Vol. 1," is now available. ■ This album is positioned as the first installment of a four-part archive series that Wayne was planning with Blue Note for release during his lifetime, under his supervision. It features a live recording from the Stockholm Jazz Festival in Sweden on October 18, 2014. With his later regular quartet formation, led by Danilo Perez (p), John Patitucci (b), and Brian Blade (ds), he thrillingly performs songs such as "Zero Gravity," "Smiling Through," "Orbits," "Lotus," and "She Moves Through the Fair." The incandescent performance, which even evokes a sense of sublimity, captures a supreme sound that can be considered one of the peak periods of his career. ■ Regarding this work, Wayne's wife, Carolina, states: "In the fall of 2022, engineer Rob Griffin began sending him a lot of unreleased recordings to organize. Wayne started listening to them all the time. When I was doing something at home, talking on the phone, or working, he would shout, 'Carolina! Come listen to this! Listen to how this band is playing!' Wayne also left detailed notes. Some of them are included in this album. He listened to the Stockholm concert (included in this work) and said, 'Let's make this an album!' Then he started listening to more things, and as time went on, he realized that one album wouldn't be enough. Wayne initially wanted to name this collection 'Unidentified Flying Objects' – he seemed to think the sounds the band was playing were UFOs! In January 2023, even when he was hospitalized for the last time, he was selecting tracks and continuing with the album layout. The spirit of 'never give up' at the core of his mission became stronger than ever, and he was excited about releasing a lot of music. It was only in the last ten days of his life that he realized he wouldn't be around to see the release. He felt the need to celebrate life in the time he had left, and decided to title the series 'Celebration.' I said, 'Yes, Wayne! Let's celebrate life!
