カタンという無人島を舞台に、島を開拓してくゲーム。具体的には、山札から得た資源を支払って、街道や開拓地などの「建設カード」を獲得。これがポイントとなって、最初に10ポイント取った人が勝者になります。いかに早くポイントになるカードを獲得することが出来るかが勝負の決め手です。
また、カードにはポイントの他に自分が有利になる効果や他のプレイヤーを妨害する効果などもあり、どのカードから獲得するかも勝負の分かれ道となます。
「カード運」と「戦略」のバランスが絶妙で、初心者から熟練者まで一緒に楽しめる新しいタイプのカードゲームです。
