The third installment in the cover series! Chan Marshall, also known as Cat Power, is a unique presence who has been active for over 30 years and is described as the "noble queen of the indie rock scene."
Her unparalleled singing voice and songwriting continue to influence many new generation artists such as Lana Del Rey, Clairo, Soccer Mommy, Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Angel Olsen.
Throughout her career, she has released two cover albums, "The Covers Record" and "Jukebox," both of which received critical acclaim on par with original albums for bringing out new charms in the original songs. Now, she releases her latest cover series installment, "Covers," on Domino.
The album looks back at songs that have influenced her from childhood to the present, with each song deeply connected to personal memories.
Billie Holiday's "I'll Be Seeing You" was a favorite of her grandmother, and she had a fateful encounter with Kitty Wells' "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" when she found a box of cassette tapes in her teens.
The album also includes the thrilling experience of hearing Iggy Pop's "Endless Sea" in the 1986 film "Dogs in Space" starring Michael Hutchence, and the memory of spending her last coins on The Replacements' "Here Comes a Regular" at a jukebox in a New York bar during her 20s as a struggling artist.
Marshall not only covers iconic rock artists like Nico and Nick Cave but also showcases her inimitable powerful vocals and sophisticated arrangement skills on contemporary artists' songs, brilliantly capturing the rebellious spirit of Dead Man's Bones' "PaPa Power" and the dreamlike atmosphere of Lana Del Rey's "A White Mustang."
On this album, "Covers," Marshall, an ever-evolving artist, revisits her own song "Hate" (from her 2006 album "The Greatest"), in which she sang, "I hate myself and want to die."
According to Marshall, she has always felt "unwilling" about this track, and has therefore reconfigured it under the title "Unhate."
