This book is a translation of "A True and Complete Account of the Life of William Adams, Part One 1564-1610" by Richard Irving.
The recent remake of James Clavell's "Shogun" has sparked renewed interest in the life of the real English sailor William Adams, who was the inspiration for the fictional John Blackthorne. This is not surprising, as the true story of how Adams became a samurai is an epic adventure as thrilling as any novel.
The translation of William Adams' complete life story is in two volumes. Volume One contains Acts I, II, and III of Richard Irving's "A True and Complete Account of the Life of William Adams - the English Samurai." It covers the period from 1564, the year of Adams' birth, to 1610, the year Tokugawa Ieyasu elevated Adams to samurai status.
Act I tells of Adams' early life, his apprenticeship as a ship's master, his role in repelling the Spanish Armada, and his trading activities along the dangerous Barbary Coast of North Africa. Act II recounts Adams' astonishing voyage to Japan through the perilous Strait of Magellan and his interrogation by Tokugawa Ieyasu in Osaka Castle upon his arrival. Act III covers Adams' first decade in Japan, set against the backdrop of the end of a brutal civil war and the rebuilding of the city that would become modern Tokyo.
During these years, Captain Adams and the former Shogun Ieyasu developed a deep mutual respect. Adams was eventually rewarded with the coveted position of hatamoto, meaning he became the "English Samurai."
The second volume of this series will conclude the story in Acts IV and V.
