Newly developed approximately 10.1 million pixel CMOS sensor
Features a large, self-developed CMOS sensor with approximately 10.1 million effective pixels (total pixels approximately 10.5 million) (22.2×14.8mm: APS-C size). Improved on-chip micro-lenses increase light-gathering efficiency, and compared to the EOS 30D, pixel size has been reduced while maintaining a standard ISO range of 100 to 1600. Extended ISO sensitivity allows selection of ISO 3200, enabling support for a wider range of subjects. Additionally, with the second-generation on-chip noise reduction circuit, thorough reduction of random noise and fixed pattern noise is achieved, ensuring low noise even at high ISO sensitivities and long exposure times. Furthermore, the auto mode and portrait mode, among other simple shooting zones, automatically set ISO sensitivity within a range of 100 to 800, expanded one step toward higher brightness compared to previous models, and automatic ISO setting is also enabled in applications such as shutter priority AE and aperture priority AE. In automatic mode, ISO sensitivity is automatically set to achieve a shutter speed less prone to camera shake according to brightness, with sensitivity settings adjusted according to the shooting mode.
High-performance imaging engine "DIGIC III"
Adopts the high-performance imaging engine "DIGIC III," capable of processing vast amounts of image data quickly and at a high level, achieving both high-definition digital image processing and high-speed continuous shooting. Also, the processing that converts the analog signals output from the CMOS sensor into digital signals has been improved from 12bit (4,096 gradations) to 14bit (16,384 gradations), enabling more natural and rich tonal expression. Furthermore, noise reduction functions that reduce noise during long exposure and high ISO shooting can be set as custom functions.

Maximum approximately 6.5 frames/sec and about 75 continuous shots
Thanks to four-channel high-speed signal readout from the CMOS sensor, high-speed image processing with DIGIC III, and a dual-motor system, the continuous shooting performance has improved compared to previous models, reaching about 6.5 frames/sec in the EOS 40D. You can switch between about 6.5 fps "high-speed continuous shooting" and about 3 fps "low-speed continuous shooting" according to your shooting needs. 9-point AF with high-precision cross-type sensors at all points
All nine AF points are equipped with cross-type sensors capable of detecting vertical and horizontal lines, providing highly accurate detection and excellent focus performance with few subjects that are difficult to focus on. The central AF point is equipped with a sensor capable of detecting vertical and horizontal lines compatible with F2.8, a first for EOS series, enabling more precise focusing. Also, equipped with a large defocus sensor capable of quick focus adjustment even from significantly out-of-focus states.

High-performance new viewfinder with approximately 0.95x magnification

Enhanced viewfinder information display
Added ISO sensitivity display within the viewfinder. Even in auto mode, ISO value is shown. The monochrome shooting mode now displays "B/W," and the number of remaining shots for continuous shooting has been upgraded from a single digit to a two-digit display, allowing more accurate management of remaining shots.
Shooting function settings via LCD monitor
Shutter speed, aperture, and other settings can be checked and adjusted on the large 3.0-inch LCD monitor. Useful for high-position shots with a tripod where the viewfinder or top panel display cannot be seen.

Expanded shooting styles with live view
Live view shooting
Features live view mode that allows shooting while confirming real-time images from the CMOS sensor on the camera’s LCD monitor. Enables framing, focus adjustment, and exposure confirmation while viewing real-time images. Effective for macro photography using a tripod. Live view offers approximately 100% viewfinder coverage. Also supports magnification up to 5x/10x for precise focus. Displays grid lines to check horizontal and vertical alignment, and can show exposure settings such as shutter speed and aperture with brightness adjustments. Using the included "EOS Utility" software, remote live view shooting is possible by confirming composition and focus on a computer display in real time.
Silent shooting mode
During live view shooting, the mode is set to suppress operational noise compared to normal shooting, making it effective for events like concerts or stage photography where noise should be minimized. It is also possible to set the mode to minimize operational sound by not performing shutter charge until the shutter button is released.
AF functions during live view
AF functions during live view can be added to custom functions. Pressing the AF-ON button during live view temporarily suspends live view and performs AF.

Supports various shooting styles
Interchangeable focusing screens
In addition to the standard focusing screen, two optional screens are available. The grid type "Ef-D" is useful for composition, confirming horizontal and vertical alignment. The "Ef-S" screen, which makes manual focus easier with lenses brighter than F2.8, is effective for manual focus with such lenses.
My Menu function
Allows quick access to frequently used functions without searching through menus or custom functions. Up to six items can be registered. It can be set to display the My Menu screen first when pressing the menu button.
Camera user setting registration
Allows registration of up to three sets of camera settings, including shooting functions and menu configurations, directly on the camera body. Useful for quickly switching between different shooting conditions.
Small RAW
Added Small RAW image type. Has about one-quarter the pixels and roughly half the file size of standard RAW, making it easier to handle while retaining the editing flexibility of RAW images.
High brightness and tonal priority functions

AF-ON button

2-second self-timer
