"The Four Heavenly Kings" The Four Heavenly Kings are four warrior gods (King Dhritarashtra, King Virudhaka, King Virupaksha, and King Vaishravana) who protect the four cardinal directions at the midpoint of Mount Sumeru and guard the Buddhist law and its devotees.
They serve Indra, are clad in armor, and are depicted with angry expressions, trampling on evil demons.
"King Vaishravana" A god who protects the northern direction.
Named for having heard (Vaishravana) much of Shakyamuni's teachings, when worshipped alone, he is called "Bishamonten" and is known as one of the Seven Lucky Gods, a deity of victory in war and good fortune.
He holds a special position among the Four Heavenly Kings.
"King Dhritarashtra" A god who protects the eastern direction.
He serves Indra, resides on the eastern midpoint of Mount Sumeru, and has the role of pacifying the country by vanquishing conflict and evil.
"King Virudhaka" A god who protects the southern direction.
He is said to bring abundant harvests and increase the blessings of the people, and to have the virtue of fostering people's growth.
A god who protects the southern direction.
He is said to bring abundant harvests and increase the blessings of the people, and to have the virtue of fostering people's growth.
"King Virupaksha" Characterized by his intelligent appearance, he observes evil with thousand-mile eyes (pure heavenly eyes) and protects the Buddhist law with a brush and scroll.
Among the Four Heavenly Kings, he is distinct in that, while depicted with an angry expression, unlike other members who wield weapons, he is portrayed in an intellectual manner, as if handling information.
They protect the four cardinal directions of east, west, north, and south, and are worshipped as guardian deities who ward off disaster and malice and improve luck in contests and finances, due to their armed appearance trampling on evil demons.
