ステレオラブがツアー限定7インチを数量限定で一般発売！ビッグ・シーフで10年にわたり活動を共にしてきたバック・ミークとプロデューサーのジェームス・クリヴチェニア。そのパートナーシップから生まれた本作『TheMirror』は、バンドの持つライヴならではの躍動感と、斜めから差し込むような電子音の世界を融合させるという発想から始まった。ビッグ・シーフの『DragonNewWarmMountainIBelieveInYou』や、クリヴチェニア自身の最新ソロ作『PerformingBelief』などのプロダクション経験を通じ、電子的要素によってサウンドに生命を吹き込み、奥行きのある音像を探求している。演奏者たちはリアルタイムで呼応し、その演奏がモジュラー・シンセサイザーを駆動していく...『TheMirror』は、相互作用的な実験を通して共同体のムードを楽曲に落とし込んでいる。
本作には、友人や家族、そして長年のコラボレーターたちが参加。エイドリアン・レンカーをはじめ、アダム・ブリズビン(gt)、ケン・ウッドワード(Ba)、さらに、作曲家でアンビエント・ミュージシャンのアレックス・ソマーズがシンセサイザーやトイ・マイク、ピアノで参加し、ハープの才媛として知られるメアリー・ラティモアが万華鏡のような音色を提供している。ドラマーはクリヴチェニアを含む4人が入れ替わりで参加し、幅広いダイナミクスを生み出しており、ミークの兄であるディラン・ミークがピアノ、鍵盤、ヴォーカルで参加。前作でエンジニアも担当したエイドリアン・オルセンがモジュラー・シンセを用いて多彩なサウンドと旋律を残している。
Pitchforkが評するように、ミークは「哲学的な感触を持つソングライティングを得意とする」存在であり、その特質は『TheMirror』全編にわたって色濃く表れている。本作を通して彼は、答えを見つけることよりも、正しい問いを探し続けるという姿勢のもと、未知の領域を受け入れていく。本作には優しさを帯びた力強さがあり、同時に揺るぎない脆さが共存している。
