The performances recorded by the Czech maestro Kubelik with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra on 9 LPs from 1978 to 1980 mark the deepening of this renowned conductor’s peak artistry. The recordings of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 "Romantic" and No. 3, made in November 1979 and October 1980, respectively, were the beginning of this major Bruckner symphony recording project. Although the project was ultimately not realized, the two remaining pieces are characterized by meticulous attention to detail and a grand, natural interaction, showcasing the maestro’s skill. The No. 3 uses the rare 1950 Easer revision second draft, and No. 4 uses the popular Novák revision of 1878/80. The Wagner recordings were originally used as filler for the LP release of Bruckner’s No. 4. These early digital recordings were made in the Herkulessaal in Munich, renowned for its acoustics, through a joint production by CBS (David Mottl) and Bavarian Radio (Friedrich Werts), and were remastered in DSD from the original 2-track digital source to commemorate Kubelik’s 110th birthday.
