Bavarian Radio Symphony OrchestraMaestro Mariss Jansons (conductor)
Recorded January 20-21, 2005 (live)Munich, Philharmonie im Gasteig (Germany)
This is a live recording from January 2005. It features Jansons’ fulfilling Bruckner performance, recorded at an important concert at the beginning of the year in Munich, just after his 62nd birthday. Originally, this live album was distributed only to orchestra members, but last year it was released as part of Jansons’ “Bruckner Collection,” a six-disc set, and this is its first individual sale.
Jansons adopted the “Third Edition” revised in 1889. This third edition, completed around the time he finished the first draft of Symphony No. 8, includes deletions of Wagner motifs from the original concept and revisions to orchestration. Its high level of completeness is highly regarded, and many conductors now use this third edition. Jansons’ performance is marked by contrast; in the first movement, which employs various materials, his handling of tempo changes is superb, and in the lyrical second movement, he allows the melodies to sing fully. The third movement, characteristic of Bruckner, features lively waltz rhythms handled lightly. In the majestic fourth movement, he delivers energetic music, and at the end, he beautifully sings the main theme from the beginning of the first movement with great clarity. After the final note fades, a moment of silence is followed by a grand applause, demonstrating the excellence of this performance.
