Released on April 22, 2022, by Jagjaguwar, this album is a personal and collaborative work from the songwriter, producer, versatile instrumentalist, and longest-serving member of Bon Iver after Justin Vernon. Four years after his previous album "Hundred Acres," Carey created 10 songs during the most difficult and transformative period of his life. Through recording at his home in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, working with co-producers Chris Messina and Zach Hanson at their studio in Gualala, California, and revelations during peaceful moments of fly fishing in Montana, Carey, facing the breakdown of his marriage, the death of his father, and the growth of his children, created "Break Me Open" with overwhelming gratitude and generosity. Over the past decade, Carey has become an indispensable collaborator within and outside the Bon Iver community, participating in Sufjan Stevens' "Carrie & Lowell" and composing and producing for artists like Low. Meanwhile, he has nurtured his own work through various themes. "Break Me Open" features the most co-written songs ever recorded. He not only opened up his sources of inspiration but also welcomed many voices into his world. Strings were arranged by master Rob Moose, and Ben Lester, Jeremy Boettcher, Nick Ball, John Raymond, Chris Thomson, Eli Teplin, and Taylor Deupree provided backing vocals.
