一六世紀後半四名の少年使節がローマ教皇のもとへ派遣されて日本を旅立った。一行は嵐を乗越えマドリード、ローマと訪れ、教皇に謁見した。やがて帰国の途に着き八年五ヶ月ぶりに日本の地を踏んだ。しかしそれは禁教令の発せられる中での帰国であった。
領土的野心の満ちた宣教師の思惑や、少年たちを上から目線で歓迎したヨーロッパ人、異文化との接触に戸惑いながらも対応し得た柔軟性のある少年使節たちの姿が、印象深く読み取れるドキュメンタリー的歴史小説である。
