女子少年院の少女たちを取材した著者が、今度は多摩少年院、久里浜少年院の４人の少年を取材し、少年たちの心と犯罪の背景に迫った。幼少期から親に虐待されて家出、食うために窃盗や強盗をした子ども。友達の身代わりに詐欺の受け子をして抜けられなくなった子ども。それぞれの犯罪の裏には、まだ自立できない年齢なのに、頼れる大人も安らぎもないという家庭や社会の問題がある。また、少年院を出ても昔の仲間が足を引っ張る。追い詰められた結果、闇バイトの実行犯として懲役刑を受けた18歳の「特定少年」は「捕まってホッとしている」と言った。自暴自棄になっていた別の少年は「犯罪をして、ダメになったら死ねばいいやと思ってた」――。
頼れる人のいない少年が生きていくには多くの困難がある。だが少年犯罪厳罰化は進み、2022年、改正少年法が施行された。自身も少年院経験者の著者は、彼らが犯罪へと踏み込んでいくのは少年だけの問題ではなく、社会、すなわち大人の問題でもあると語る。人は人とつながることで生きていける。支えがあれば、人は変われる！
