The Bon Festival is a ceremony to welcome the spirits of ancestors and close family members who have passed away into this world. It begins with the "Mukaebi" (welcoming fire) and ends with the "Okuribi" (sending fire).
In your home, decorate with a Bon lantern as the Mukaebi and Okuribi to honor the spirits of ancestors and departed family members. Since it is the time when ancestors return once a year, do your best to show hospitality within your means.

Traditionally,White lanterns for the new Obonwere prepared by the family of the deceased, whilepatterned Bon lanterns (used annually)were prepared by relatives and acquaintances. However, due to recent changes in living environments, the placement and space for decoration have shifted from Buddhist altars to living rooms and other areas, leading families of the deceased toprepare all lanterns and Bon-related items themselves,while relatives and acquaintances tend to bring offerings (cash, incense, etc.).

Furthermore, the timing for decorating varies by household. While decorations are centered around the four days from the first day of Obon (the 13th, the beginning of the welcoming period) to the 16th, many start decorating gradually during the Obon month (July or August) to avoid rushing on the day itself.
