The 5th album, "SABLE, fABLE," is here! Justin Vernon turns the page and begins the next chapter, an epilogue, for Bon Iver. Released on April 11th by Jagjaguwar, "SABLE, fABLE" is the project's first album in six years and features a love story set to glistening, radiant pop music.
Beginning with the three-song EP "SABLE," released last fall, this album seamlessly unfolds into a new saga of nine songs where one becomes two, darkness transforms into salmon-colored beauty, and sorrow gives way to irrepressible joy.
While "SABLE," was a sparse and solitary farewell to the pain that had long defined the past, "fABLE" looks towards a vibrant future filled with light, purpose, and possibility – a partner, new memories, perhaps a family.
Ahead of the April 11th release, Bon Iver officially entered the "fABLE" era on Valentine's Day this year with "Everything Is Peaceful Love." The single was released alongside a music video shot and edited by HBO's "How To with John Wilson" filmmaker, John Wilson. Produced by Justin Vernon and Jim-E Stack, "SABLE, fABLE" was primarily recorded at Vernon's April Base in Wisconsin. The album's concept was born when Stack arrived at April Base with Danielle Haim on 2.22.22. Over a few snow-covered days, Vernon and Haim's voices intertwined on "If Only I Could Wait," a duet with the crucial perspective that "outside the glow of new love, you don't have the strength to be the best version of yourself."
If "SABLE," was the prologue, then "fABLE" is the book. But together, "SABLE, fABLE" is an album, not a fairytale. There is an undeniable healing in the immersion, and the intense clarity, focus, honesty, and celebration it brings to these songs. "Everything Is Peaceful Love" is a portrait of a man overwhelmed by the bliss of finding someone to fall in love with. Yet, the shadows of "SABLE," still loom, and old feelings can resurface even as one tries to reset and start anew. Like a fable, each track plants a lesson. "fABLE" sings of the selfless rhythm required when engaging with others and lovers – a patient commitment to finding the pace for becoming better, and the feeling of togetherness. Gone are the evasive, dense layers of sound that protected Justin Vernon's voice on "i,i" or "22, A Million." "SABLE, fABLE" is a canvas stripped bare to the truth.
