Dedicated to "Good Quality"
A Commitment to Pursuing the Finest Helmets
Born in Asakusa, Tokyo, in 1954 (Showa 29).
In 1972 (Showa 47), apprenticed under his father, the second-generation Jisso Masamasa.
In 1983 (Showa 58), succeeded the name Sanse Bessho Masamasa.
In 1993 (Heisei 5), repaired the long-strap metal fittings of a chestnut temple treasure housed in Kawagoe Kita-in.
Since then, he has produced and exhibited numerous works, including:
- The armor of the legendary general Kimbouki, with traditional wooden core and authentic fittings
- A helmet with a San Kubi-gata front crest and a torso armor with a rounded body suit
- Tokugawa Ieyasu’s "O Kuro Atamabuta-gata Helmet"
- Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s "Black Lacquered Horse-ran Helmet"
- Kuroda Nagamasa’s "Black Silver Leaf-Pressed Helmet"
In 2009 (Heisei 21), he expanded his activities by reproducing the helmet of Saito Motoshige, a treasure of Tada Shrine in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, through detailed copying.
All small parts such as helmet bowls and fittings, which are now often machine-made, are handcrafted entirely by Masamasa.
He believes that the charm of craftsmanship remains both in the past and present.
Even slight distortions that are not perfectly straight add character, reflecting the handwork and atmosphere of the helmets used during their time.
He personally visits museums, studies real helmets visually, and considers how they are made before creating his works.
As a helmet craftsman, he is committed to producing items that "satisfy customers" and "represent the best he can do."
For the important cultural property, the Kashidori silk shoulder armor and red armor body, he reproduces the silk threads exactly, using a special twisted thread called Kashidori, which is woven diagonally with navy blue and red threads.
He uses detailed fittings with Chōtōkarasumon patterns, faithfully reproduced on the helmet stand and the back crest.
The "Momoe-zashi" (multiple-layer embroidery) features fabric sewn in a spiral pattern by hand on the back of the helmet bowl, just like authentic armor.
