プレイヤー（主人公）は、ドラゴンピースの一員として、竜を手渡され、うまく調教して育てながら、暴走した精霊を退治していくというストーリー。戦いは竜が行い、プレイヤーは作戦の指示を行うというプレイスタイルとなっている。竜は戦いで学習していき、次第に強力な竜に育っていく。
また竜は、食事の与え方によっても、さまざまなタイプに生まれ変わっていく。体型、模様、色のパターンは、計算上だけでも、2万種類以上が存在しており、自分オリジナルの竜を育成していくという楽しみもある。メモリーカードによって、育てた竜を交換したり、対戦協力プレイなどコミュニケーションプレイが可能な点も魅力のひとつだ。（大山真一）
