The long-awaited box set of Giovanni Antonini and the Basel Chamber Orchestra's complete Beethoven symphony recordings, which they meticulously completed over 12 years in chronological order across two labels, is now a reality. This is a remarkable achievement! Antonini, a recorder player and founder of the Italian early music ensemble "Il Giardino Armonico," has continued to deliver innovative performances, primarily of Baroque music. Since the 2000s, he has also focused on his activities as a conductor, expanding his repertoire to include the Classical period beyond the Baroque. The complete Beethoven symphony recordings with the Basel Chamber Orchestra, where he has served as Principal Guest Conductor since the 2015/16 season, began with Symphony No. 1 recorded in November 2004. The first installment, coupled with Symphony No. 2 recorded the following year, was released by Germany's Oehms Classics and became a bestseller in Japan due to its remarkably vivid and dramatically nuanced interpretation. From Symphony No. 3 "Eroica," recorded in 2006, the label changed to Sony Classical, and the recordings proceeded at a leisurely pace, with approximately one symphony recorded per year. The series reached a magnificent conclusion with Symphony No. 9 "Choral," recorded in 2016, four years after Symphony No. 8 recorded in 2012. Antonini speaks about his Beethoven recordings with the Basel Chamber Orchestra: "It feels like I've grown with Beethoven over these 12 years. It may still be short considering the weight of the time he spent creating. (Interruption) After solidifying my footing step by step, and taking time to return to repertoire I've long been involved with, such as Baroque music, I would face Beethoven again... The significance of opening up new perspectives there is immense. There was no need for me to rush. (Interruption) Beethoven's works contain many symbolic elements, and I can also sense the essence of German thought processes within them. It is certainly not impossible to interpret them as containing metaphysical issues, or as conveying ideology and political messages rooted in the social conditions of the time. However, I want to prioritize the human energy emanating from the music itself, while first and foremost grounding myself in the score."
