Giovanni Antonini, an outstanding recorder player and founder of the Italian early music orchestra "Il Giardino Armonico," has focused more on conducting since the 2000s, expanding his repertoire to the Classical period beyond the Baroque. He has achieved success with guest appearances with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. With the Basel Chamber Orchestra, where he serves as a guest conductor, he has performed Beethoven's symphonies extensively, earning high acclaim. The Basel Chamber Orchestra, which seamlessly moves between modern and period instruments, uses period instruments for trumpets, horns, and timpani, gut strings for the string section, and modern instruments for the woodwinds while boldly incorporating HIP (Historically Informed Performance) style. The brilliance and elegance of gut strings with restrained vibrato, the raw roughness of brass and timpani. The unique and beautiful phrasing of the woodwinds, the forward-driving rhythm, and the distinctive dynamics and phrasing reflecting the rhetoric of performance at the time, reveal numerous newly discovered charms, successfully recreating a three-dimensional and dynamic image of Beethoven. The vocalists are also top-tier soloists, and the Wrocław Philharmonic Choir forms a perfect ensemble. Domestic edition only, Blu-spec CD2 specification. Contents: Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 "Choral". Regula Mühlemann (Soprano), Marie-Claude Chappuis (Mezzo-Soprano), Maximilian Schmitt (Tenor), Thomas E. Bauer (Baritone), Wrocław Philharmonic Choir, Basel Chamber Orchestra, Conductor: Giovanni Antonini. [Recording] September 5-7, 2016, National Forum of Music, Concert Hall, Wrocław, Poland.
