*This is an astonishing release. Klemperer, who resumed his activities in post-war Germany, was most closely associated with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra. Performances from this period have already been released on CD by various labels, and Beethoven is no exception. The 1966 Beethoven performances, which for some reason have not seen the light of day until now, are appearing for the very first time! Happily, this is a superb stereo recording. You can savor the exquisite nuance of Klemperer's characteristic violin placement with both sections to the left and right. "Leonore" Overture No. 3 is said to be his latest performance, and given that the live recording with the Berlin Philharmonic in May of the same year was monaural, this is a highly welcome release. It begins with a powerful fortissimo that strikes like a hammer blow to the skull, and the solemn sound and tension are sustained throughout. Klemperer's dignified artistry is overwhelming. Symphony No. 4 is also a repertoire he excels at. When thinking of Klemperer's live recordings of the 4th Symphony, the 1969 performance with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is famous, but this recording adopts a more lively tempo than that one. A brilliant performance that conveys pleasure even within its heaviness. Symphony No. 5, "Fate," is also a masterpiece among masterpieces that the maestro frequently performed. If you listen closely, you can clearly perceive Klemperer's distinct intention: while imposing considerable strictness on the string ensemble, he consciously emphasizes the woodwinds, allowing them to float. The somber tone of the horns in the third movement, so characteristic of a German orchestra, resonates deeply. This is a must-have performance.
