Scribendum in the UK has released two box sets containing a total of 22 CDs from the major Philips and Decca recordings left by the master Eduard van Beinum. This first volume contains 9 CDs of recordings from Decca. Van Beinum conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra from the Mengelberg era, building a relationship with the orchestra spanning 30 years. He was deeply involved with the orchestra as chief conductor for the latter 14 years, delivering numerous masterful performances. Van Beinum made a few recordings during the war, but his recording career truly took off after signing with Decca in 1946. He recorded mainly with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, but also with the London Philharmonic, and his relationship with Decca continued until 1953. Many of the recordings made during this period are full of vitality, perhaps due to Decca's tendency towards a raw sound. These include the highly regarded Brahms Symphony No. 1, Symphonie fantastique, Mahler's Symphony No. 4, and Bruckner's Symphony No. 7, which convey Van Beinum's energetic conducting at the time.
