連続でリリースしたEP3作品を1枚にコンパイル！2024年初頭、バッドバッドノットグッドは創造的なエネルギーに満ち溢れていた。海外ツアーや、ダニエル・シーザー、シャーロット・デイ・ウィルソン、レギー、ベイビー・ローズ、アルトゥール・ヴェロカイ、ターンスタイルといったアーティストとの一連のセッションを終えたばかりで、アル・ソウ、チェスター・ハンセン、リーランド・ウィッティのカナダ人トリオは、スタジオに戻って創作することを熱望していた。バッドバッドノットグッドのツアー・メンバーであるフェリックス・フォックス＝パパス（key）をはじめ、ケーリン・マーフィー（tp）、ファン・カルロス・メドラーノ・マガリャネス（perc）、LAのミュージシャン、タイラー・ロット（g）といったトロントのジャズ・シーンで活躍するキーパーソンたちに声をかけ、2024年2月にロサンゼルスのValentineStudiosで1週間の集中的かつクリエイティヴなレコーディングを行った。その結果が、この『MidSpiral』である。『MidSpiral』はインストゥルメンタル・ジャズを核とし、バッドバッドノットグッドが無限のジャンルと音楽性を自分たちのコンポジションに統合する限界に挑戦し続けることを可能にする。
ValentineStudiosでのセッションでは、さらに多くのミュージシャンを招き、より多くの楽器の音がスタジオに響いた。3人が数週間分の素材を吟味していくうちに、3つの異なるムードが浮かび上がってきた。カオス、秩序、そして成長である。バッドバッドノットグッドは、2021年末に高い評価を得たアルバム『TalkMemory』をリリースして以来、着実に活動を続けている。このオルタナティブ・ジャズ・アンサンブルは、『NewHeartDesigns』に収録されているターンスタイルの「AlienLoveCall」のリミックスで、5度目のグラミー賞ノミネート（最優秀リミックス・レコーディング賞）を獲得した。今年1月には、ヒューストンの新進気鋭ヴォーカリスト、レギーをフィーチャーした「TakeWhat'sGiven」をリリースした。「Sleeper」ではシャーロット・デイ・ウィルソン、「MiNtcHoCoLaTe」では〈88rising〉の音楽コレクティヴ、1999WRITETHEFUTUREやウエストサイド・ガン、コンウェイ・ザ・マシーン、「theordinaryisordinarybecauseitordinarilyrepeats」ではジョナ・ヤノといったコラボレーターとのシングルが続いた。さらにバッドバッドノットグッドは、ダニエル・シーザーの2023年のアルバム『NeverEnough』に参加し、新進アーティスト、エルミーンと共にシングル「MarkingMyTime」のエディットを披露。トーキング・ヘッズのトリビュート・アルバム『Everyone'sGettingInvolved:ATributetoTalkingHead’sStopMakingSense』では、ノラ・ジョーンズと共に「ThisMustBeThePlace(NaiveMelody)」のカヴァーを制作した。
