【GG90/40】One year before the legendary debut record — the earliest Goldbergs.
■ The Goldbergs recorded in June 1955, marking Gould’s debut recording of the Goldberg Variations. Although Gould had performed this variation several times in concerts before, the only surviving recording is the live broadcast from June 1954 on CBC Radio, included on this disc. It was made by Gould himself for listening and recording purposes, and was discovered among his belongings after his death.
■ The recording vividly captures Gould before a live microphone, confidently presenting his interpretation without pretense. His high-level piano technique, the exquisite carving of the personalities of each of the 30 variations, and the overall structure reinforced by the aria at the end, highlight the close affinity with Gould’s iconic “Goldberg Variations.” It also includes four pieces from The Well-Tempered Clavier Book II, recorded in February 1952 and April 1954.
