Hasegawa 1/72 US Navy A-4E/F Skyhawk Plastic Model B9
1/72 scale plastic model.
In the early 1950s, the US Navy began development of its next carrier-based attack aircraft. In response to this plan, Douglas's design team proposed a small aircraft, born from research into lightweight fighters, with a total weight of less than 6.8 tons and a wingspan of less than 8.4 meters. This bold design proposal was approved, and a contract was signed. The first prototype (XA-4A), which made its maiden flight on June 22, 1954, was designed with thorough weight reduction in mind. The aircraft was designed with simplified airframe structure and ease of maintenance, featuring a single-piece wing assembly onto which the fuselage was mounted.
Production continued for 26 years until the final production aircraft were delivered in February 1979, with a total of 2,960 aircraft produced, proving the excellence of the A-4 Skyhawk's basic design.
The A-4E is an improved version of the A-4C, with the engine changed from the J65 to the J52-P-6. Along with the engine change, the shape of the air intake also changed, and the maximum ordnance load under the wings was increased to 8,200 lb (3,720 kg).
The A-4F was the final type for the US Navy, with an upgraded J52-P-8A engine and the addition of a hump fairing on the upper rear fuselage to house electronic equipment. The A-4F was also used by the US Navy's aerobatic team, the Blue Angels, from 1974 to 1986, captivating audiences with its dynamic flights.
