In 1996, the Japan Organic & Natural Foods Association (the predecessor of JAS) dispatched inspectors who examined and certified that the tea from production to packaging was genuinely organically cultivated, thus granting Japan’s first "Organic Certification."
At that time, when many products claimed to be "organic" without proper certification, this was a groundbreaking event and received significant media coverage.
- Why JAS-certified products remain affordable despite strict standards:
Following green tea, in 1998, black tea and barley tea also obtained "Organic Certification."
Even with the 2000 revision of the JAS law, which adopted stricter standards inherited from JONA, the products successfully passed, and many have since acquired Organic JAS certification. Currently, over 40 products are certified.
