The striped pattern, popular among commoners during the Edo period, was brought to Japan through trade with European countries. The commoners of Edo created various striped patterns and enjoyed the "iki" (chic/stylish) aesthetic. They named the fine vertical stripes, thinner than "Chisuji" (thousand stripes), "Mansuji" (ten thousand stripes) because it sounded like "man iru" (meaning "ten thousand enter," implying good fortune). "Aizome" (indigo dyeing) is considered a symbolic Japanese dyeing color that has existed since ancient times, and "Kakishibu-zome" (persimmon tannin dyeing) was used for many purposes, with the dye, aged over many years, possessing high waterproof, anti-corrosive, and insect-repellent properties. After dyeing with "Aizome," the "Mansuji" pattern was discharged using a discharge dyeing technique, and then "Kakishibu-zome" was applied over it. The fine stripes, resembling those drawn with a brush, exhibit a unique charm in each piece due to the hand-dyeing by skilled artisans. The striped pattern, which appears plain from a distance, blends well with any space. It is a "kawariori" (change weave) with a coarse weave that is soft and comfortable to the touch.
