A phantom live performance, including unreleased material, is revived for the modern era!! Experimental, disco, garage, pop, folk... Arthur Russell, a genius and maverick who roamed freely across the left-field. He left behind numerous legends in the NY underground scene of the 1970s and 80s, and after his death from AIDS in 1992, his exceptional talent was once again brought into the spotlight. His avant-garde and experimental works can be found not only in unreleased material but also in numerous reissues and compilations, and through a wide range of media, including books and films, his musicality, and indeed his persona, continue to exert an ongoing influence.
This work is no exception, featuring unreleased material as well as recordings released only on cassette and digital in 2020. Furthermore, the fact that these recordings form the basis of Arthur Russell's signature and masterpiece, "World of Echo," makes this an essential listen for a deeper understanding of his aesthetic sensibility.
This work, recorded at Experimental Intermedia (a New York-based avant-garde music foundation directed by Phil Niblock), was planned and produced by Phil Niblock, a master of NY experimental music also known as a pioneer of minimalist drone music, in collaboration with Arthur Russell. It features two unedited solo performances by Arthur: "Sketches for World of Echo" from 1984 and "Open Vocal Phrases Where Songs Come In and Out" from 1985. These two performance recordings formed the basis for his first full-length solo album, "World of Echo," released in 1986, which solidified his reputation as a contemporary composer.
This release, presented as a phantom live album including unreleased material, is available as a 2-CD set and a 2-LP set, each with different content, titles, and artwork. The 2-LP set includes the complete "Open Vocal Phrases Where Songs Come In and Out" performance, released for the first time, on Sides 1 through 3, and on Side 4, it features "Changing Forest" and "Sunlit Water" from the "Sketches for World of Echo" performance.
Both the imported CD and LP include a full-color insert and liner notes by Steve Knutson, founder of Audika Records, which has handled many of Arthur Russell's archives. Additionally, the domestic CD and obi-wrapped LP will include separate Japanese liner notes.
