Piet Mondrian (born 1872, died 1944) was a Dutch painter and a master of abstract art. He was a founding member of the avant-garde movement "De Stijl," initiated by Theo van Doesburg. He contributed to the development of abstract painting known as "Neo-Plasticism." His representative works are compositions characterized by a grid of black vertical and horizontal lines on a white background, using the three primary colors. During his student years, he was a landscape painter in the styles of Realism and Impressionism. However, as evidenced by works displayed at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, he consistently focused on the three primary colors – red, blue, and yellow – even then. His move from the Netherlands to Paris in 1911 brought about a significant change for Mondrian. Inspired by the experimental art of Cubism and finding his identity within the Parisian avant-garde movement, he changed the spelling of his Dutch name from "Mondriaan" to "Mondrian." When World War II broke out, he moved to the United States. Inspired by the grid layout of Manhattan and American jazz music, particularly "Boogie Woogie," his late works shifted from his previous chic abstract paintings to warmer abstract paintings influenced by the real world.
