Pablo Picasso was born in 1881. He was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet, and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France. He is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and a co-founder of the Cubism movement. Picasso's artistic style was known for its wide-ranging creativity, including the invention of assemblage sculpture and the rediscovery of collage. His representative works include "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" (1907), created during the early period of Cubism, and "Guernica" (1937), which depicts the bombing of Spanish civilians by the German and Italian air forces at the request of the Spanish Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso, along with Henri Matisse and Marcel Duchamp, were artists responsible for revolutionary developments in visual arts in the early 20th century, contributing to a wide range of visual art fields beyond painting, including sculpture, printmaking, and ceramics. His artistic evaluation is generally considered to be in the early decades of the 20th century, and his works are commonly classified and discussed in periods such as the Blue Period (1901-1904), Rose Period (1904-1906), African Period (1907-1909), Analytical Cubism (1909-1912), and Synthetic Cubism (1912-1919). On May 11, 2015, "Les Femmes d'Alger" was auctioned at Christie's in New York and sold for approximately $179 million (about 21.5 billion yen), setting a record for the highest price ever achieved at auction. He is a master whose prices are expected to continue to rise at auctions.
