Mark Rothko (1903-1970) was a Russian-Jewish American painter, considered a key figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement, though Rothko himself rejected categorization into any art movement. He is regarded as one of the most famous post-war American artists, alongside Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. His seemingly simple art style was not a sudden inspiration but developed over many years of artistic activity. His symbolic horizontal, band-like motifs became emblematic of his work, blending Native American art with European Surrealism. In 1949, he began creating works featuring self-contained rectangles, or two to three stacked rectangles with freehand edges, subtly adjusting light and shadow to achieve evocative color tones. He also employed techniques to create contrast, such as ambiguous translucency, creating texture through raised or smooth surfaces and brushwork. His art was often described as extraordinary and was sometimes compared to commonplace art. Throughout his life, he maintained his style, which was praised as intellectual and highly emotional. His later works, characterized by simple, somber color palettes, seemed to foreshadow his own death. In 1952, at the "Fifteen Americans" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Rothko was formally introduced as a member of the Abstract Expressionist movement, alongside Jackson Pollock and William Baziotes.
