Henri Matisse was born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, Northern France, in 1869. He is one of the leading masters of the 20th century. Influenced by Impressionists such as Cézanne and Van Gogh, he pursued painterly expression through free use of color. In 1941, after a long battle with cancer, he was no longer able to hold a pencil and explored a new style using paper and scissors, later creating cutout works known as "cut-outs."
He studied law in Paris from 1887-1888 and became a clerk at a law firm after graduation. In 1892, after persuading his father's strong opposition, he enrolled in the Académie Julian and in 1898, entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, studying in the classroom of Gustave Moreau. It was in this class that he met Georges Rouault and Albert Marquet. He married Amélie Parayre in 1898. The following years were the worst in terms of both production and finances. To supplement his family's meager income, Matisse worked as a decorator in addition to being a painter. In 1911, he traveled to Morocco, finding inspiration in landscapes and people. This marked the beginning of his "Odalisque" series. In 1920, he designed the stage sets and costumes for Stravinsky's ballet "The Song of the Nightingale." He moved to Vence in 1943 and continued to create works not only as a painter but also as a sculptor. In 1948, his painting career came to an end with his first major series of paper cutouts (gouaches découpées) and interior scenes. From 1947-1952, he was commissioned to decorate the Rosary Chapel in Vence. He created paper cutouts in 1951. In 1952, the Matisse Museum opened in Le Cateau-Cambrésis. He passed away at his home in Vence in 1954 at the age of 84.
