Jean-Michel Basquiat was born in 1960. (1960-1988) An American artist considered one of the most important masters of 20th-century art, he was born in the United States in 1960 and passed away at the young age of 27. At the age of eight, he was in a car accident and had his spleen removed. A book titled "Gray's Anatomy," given to him by his mother during his hospitalization, left a deep impression on Basquiat and led to his later anatomical drawings. In 1980, he participated in the group exhibition "The Times Square Show" in New York. This was where he officially first exhibited his work. In 1981, he participated in the "New York New Wave" exhibition alongside Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, attracting the attention of many galleries. Basquiat also visited Japan frequently during his lifetime, holding solo and group exhibitions. In a career spanning just 10 years, he left behind over 3,000 drawings and more than 1,000 paintings. He died on August 12, 1988, at the age of 27, from acute drug intoxication. Basquiat's presence became widely known in Japan largely due to Yusaku Maezawa's acquisition of "Untitled (Skull)" for $57 million (6.24 billion yen at the time's exchange rate). This price was Basquiat's auction record at the time. In May 2022, it was sold at auction for $85 million (11 billion yen at the time's exchange rate).
