■The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (Česká filharmonie) is an orchestra based in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. It is one of the world's leading orchestras.
It was founded in 1986 with its first concert conducted by Dvořák. Leading Czech conductors have served as principal conductors, building a unique identity that has earned the Czech Republic the nickname "Land of Strings." In 1908, the world premiere of Mahler's own Symphony No. 7, "Song of the Night," was performed under his direction. In January 1998, the appointment of new principal conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy surprised the public, a memory that is still fresh.
◆It gained worldwide fame during the era of Václav Talich (1919-1931 and 1933-1941). Successors to Talich as conductors include Rafael Kubelík (1941-1948), Karel Ančerl (1950-1968), Václav Neumann (1968-1989), Jiří Bělohlávek (1990-1992), and Gerd Albrecht (1993-1996). Vladimir Ashkenazy took over the post from 1998, and Zdeněk Mácal became principal conductor on September 1, 2003. Charles Mackerras was appointed principal guest conductor.
