そんな彼らがスタジオ・アルバムとしては『PaintingWith』(2016年)以来となる最新作『TimeSkiffs』を〈Domino〉よりリリース。20年以上に渡って活動を続ける彼らは、当初から実験的なアプローチを取り入れつつも時代を超えて愛されるクラシックな楽曲を作り続け、音楽シーンに大きな影響を与え続けてきた。
6年ぶりのスタジオ・アルバム『TimeSkiffs』は、彼らの無秩序なキャリア初期や2007年の『StrawberryJam』リリース時のような空気が感じられる作品で、アルバムに収録された9曲は、ラブレターであり、遭難信号でもあり、空中観察であり、リラックスした楽曲群でもあり、人間関係や子育てなど、大人の悩みを抱えるようになった4人が集めたメッセージでもある。
それらはアニマル・コレクティヴ特有の探究心に満ちた不思議な感覚で表現されており、これまでと一貫した作風が感じられる。
スカイダイビングしたくなるような浮遊感を感じる豊かなハーモニーがあり、神秘的で解読したくなるようなテクスチャーがあり、その源流を解明したくなるような複雑なリズムがある。アニマル・コレクティヴは20年という活動期間を経ても、新たな表現を探し続けている。
『TimeSkiffs』にはこれからの未来への不安や、今直面している瞬間への困惑、悲しみや混乱、嘆きが詰め込まれている。しかし、同時に『TimeSkiffs』の中には生きる喜びがあり、愛や人生や自然や人に対する期待が存在している。4曲目の「StrungWithEverything」に登場する"It'sreallyneweveryday"という一節は、誇張されたテーゼとしてではなく、純粋な実感として湧き出てきたものであり、これこそが『TimeSkiffs』の根底にあるものだと言える。
