明石城は今から400 年前の元和5 年（1619 年）、織田信長と徳川家康の二人を曽祖父に持つ、
初代明石藩主小笠原忠政が、外様大名の多い西国の備えとして、徳川幕府2 代将軍秀忠から命じられ築城しました。
本丸跡に建つ「巽櫓」・「坤櫓」は日本には12 基しか現存しない三重櫓のうち二つで、国の重要文化財に指定されています。
