Unlike Western shoes, zori and geta are traditionally worn with the heel extending slightly beyond the base. Generally, the appropriate size is when the heel and little toe protrude slightly from the base. When wearing them, lightly hook the tip of your toes into the straps rather than pushing your toes all the way in. If you push your toes too far in, they will become loose and difficult to walk in, so be careful.
*The straps may feel tight when you first start wearing them, but they will conform to your feet with use. Taking smaller steps and walking with short strides will make you look more stylish and "iki" (chic/sophisticated). Walk by tilting the front of the base so it touches the ground, as shown in the image, and kick off with the toe area of the base. Also, for geta with raised teeth, such as the two-toothed type, try to land on both teeth rather than just the heel. Landing on the heel like you would with shoes will cause pain because the heel extends beyond the base. Walk with good posture, feeling your weight shift slightly forward.
