The fifth release in the second series of JAZZISDEAD! Despite the challenging circumstances during the COVID-19 pandemic, when live events—the foundation of the label—could not be held, the first series of 10 works was successfully completed. This installment, the fifth in the series approaching its midpoint, features the living legend Garrett Saracho, whose "rare groove" status is most prominent including in the first series.
Garrett Saracho is one of the most mysterious figures in jazz. From the legendary Pan-African People's Arkestra led by Horace Tapscott, he has been involved with musicians from the jazz scene in Watts, Los Angeles, since his teens, and signed with the prestigious impulse! label. His 1973 album *En Medio*, recorded for impulse!, was targeted for cost-cutting measures amid Middle Eastern oil embargo policies, resulting in a lack of proper promotion and unfortunate obscurity. However, his music—an effortless fusion of jazz, funk, and Latin rock—has continued to be loved as a cult classic among rare groove collectors.
His only album, which was a commercial failure, led him to switch from vibraphone to piano. He even performed with Jimi Hendrix, but later transitioned from the music industry to behind-the-scenes work in film. Although he distanced himself from recording, he received a passionate call from Adrian Young and Alisha Shaheed Muhammad, who love his early musicality, and returned to the studio.
This album features tracks that blend Latin soul, funk, and psychedelic jazz—genres that Adrian excels at. Notably, the lively Latin jazz pieces "SabordelRitmo" and "ElCambioEsNeccesario" stand out for their quality, reminiscent of New York soul. The track "Trucha," which combines Latin, rock, and breakbeats, is a powerful piece unique to Adrian and Alisha, embodying a cross-generational collaboration that captures the essence of hip-hop influences from artists like Babe Ruth and Incredible Bongo Band. The mellow Black jazz tune "The Gardens" follows the series' typical style and is beautifully produced. This record will appeal not only to core vinyl diggers who have long loved it but also to new jazz fans discovering *En Medio* for the first time, eager to experience his talent.
