[The Sumo Wrestler Statues of Shosha]According to temple tradition, the Kaisando (Founder's Hall) was built in Kanko 4 (1007), the year the founder, Shokū Shonin, passed away at the age of 96. His disciple, Ensho Risshi, is said to have founded it. Within the hall, a statue of Shokū Shonin, carved by his disciple Anchū, was enshrined, and a lapis lazuli urn containing the master's remains was placed inside the statue.During a fire in Koan 9 (1276), both the statue and the Kaisando were destroyed. However, the lapis lazuli urn was safely recovered from the ashes. The current statue of Shokū Shonin was created in Shoō 1 (1288) when Kyōnin Shonin commissioned Keikai Hōgen to carve a new image. In 2008, an X-ray examination conducted by the Nara National Museum confirmed the presence of a壺-like object within its head.
The current Kaisando was rebuilt in Kanbun 11 (1682). There are sumo wrestler statues, said to be the work of Hidari Jingorō, in three of the four corners under the eaves. The statue is missing from the northwest corner, with the legend that it fled because it could not bear the weight.
