This is a work by Hikobei Kanamori, a foundry master whose family has continued the tradition in Kanaya-machi, Takaoka, since the Keicho era.
A bell is typically hung from the ceiling in a corner of the tea room or from a wooden frame called a bell frame, and struck with a mallet-like striker. It is primarily used by the host to signal to guests that the tea ceremony is ready.
A high-pitched bell is considered "yang." In contrast to the "yin" of the night, its clear, ringing sound is used in "Yobanashi" (night tea ceremonies).
