Full text of the Heart Sutra of Prajnaparamita
Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, practicing deep Prajnaparamita, clearly saw that all five aggregates are empty, thus overcoming all suffering and distress. Shariputra, form is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from form. Form is exactly emptiness, emptiness is exactly form. The same applies to feelings, perceptions, formations, and consciousness. Shariputra, all phenomena's emptiness characteristics are not born nor extinguished, not defiled nor pure, not increasing nor decreasing. Therefore, in emptiness, there is no form, no feelings, perceptions, formations, or consciousness. No eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind. No form, sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma. No eye realm, up to no realm of consciousness. No ignorance, and also no extinction of ignorance. Up to no aging and death, and also no extinction of aging and death. No suffering, origin, cessation, or path. No wisdom and no attainment. Because there is nothing to attain, Bodhisattva, relying on Prajnaparamita, has no mental hindrance. Because there are no hindrances, there is no fear. Departing from all false dreams, reaching ultimate Nirvana. All Buddhas of the three times, relying on Prajnaparamita, attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. Therefore, know that Prajnaparamita is the great divine mantra, the great bright mantra, the supreme mantra, the incomparable mantra, capable of removing all suffering. True and not false, therefore, proclaim the Prajnaparamita mantra: Gate, gate, paragate, parasamgate, bodhi svaha.
The Prajnaparamita Heart Sutra transmitted in modern times is said to have been brought back from India by Xuanzang in the mid-7th century, who translated the original text into Chinese.
Its content summarizes the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha and is loved as the most famous sutra used in Buddhism.
The teaching of the Heart Sutra is that all things in the world are 'empty' and have no real substance.
By practicing the six paramitas, one gains the wisdom of Prajna, but even that wisdom is 'empty,' and what is gained has no real substance.
Understanding that everything is 'empty' eliminates the fear of death and removes all afflictions.
Reaching this state leads to the Pure Land, attaining Buddha's enlightenment, and being reborn as a Buddha.
