Formed in Los Angeles, USA, in 1974. Original members were David Lee Roth (vocals), Eddie Van Halen (guitar), Michael Anthony (bass), and Alex Van Halen (drums). They debuted in 1978 with the album "Van Halen." They gained popularity with Eddie's technical and phenomenal guitar playing, David's powerful vocals, and flamboyant stage presence. They reached their peak with their sixth album "1984," released in 1983, and the massive hit single "Jump," which became their first US number-one hit. In 1986, Dave left to pursue a solo career, and former Montrose vocalist Sammy Hagar joined as his replacement, leading them to grow into a representative, authentic hard rock band of America. After Sammy's departure, Gary Cherone of Extreme joined in 1998, and they released "Van Halen III," but Gary later left. After a hiatus due to Eddie's illness, Sammy returned, and they resumed activities with a US tour in 2004.
