"Fude-go" refers to the five-yen coins issued in Japan from 1949 (Showa 24) to 1958 (Showa 33).
While the typeface of current five-yen coins is Gothic, the Fude-go uses Kaisho (regular script), which looks as if it were written with a brush (fude), hence the name.
Another clue for identification is that the character for "Koku" (country) in "Nippon-koku" on the reverse is the old character form "國".
■ Reasons for the hole
The five-yen coin issued in 1948 (Showa 23) was made of brass, just like the one-yen coin issued in the same year (one-yen brass coin). The diameters differed by only 2mm (one-yen coin: 20mm, five-yen coin: 22mm), and both had reeded edges, leading to confusion between the two.
Specifically to make it easier for the visually impaired to distinguish.
