"Fude Go" (ふでご, 筆五) refers to the 5 yen coin issued in Japan from 1949 (Showa 24) to 1958 (Showa 33).While the current 5 yen coin's typeface is Gothic, the "Fude Go" uses Kaisho style, which resembles writing with a brush, hence the name. The use of the old character "國" for "国" in "日本国" on the reverse is also a clue for identification.
■ Reason for the Hole
The 5 yen coin issued in 1948 (Showa 23) was made of brass, like the 1 yen coin issued in the same year (1 yen brass coin). The diameter was only 2mm different (1 yen coin diameter 20mm, 5 yen coin diameter 22mm), and both had reeding. This led to them being mistaken for each other. It was also intended to make them easier to distinguish, especially for visually impaired individuals.Another reason was to save on material costs.---Management Number: co-02
