Fude Go (Brush Five) refers to the 5 Yen coins issued in Japan from 1949 (Showa 24) to 1958 (Showa 33).
While current 5 Yen coins feature Gothic-style characters, Fude Go coins are in Kaisho style, which appears as if written with a brush, hence the name.
The "國" character in "日本國" on the reverse is an old-style character, which is also a distinguishing feature.

■ Reason for the hole
The 5 Yen coins issued in 1948 (Showa 23) were made of brass, the same material as the 1 Yen coins issued in the same year (1 Yen Brass Coin). Their diameters differ by only 2 mm (1 Yen coin: 20 mm, 5 Yen coin: 22 mm), and both have serrated edges, which could lead to confusion.
The hole was introduced mainly to make it easier for visually impaired individuals to distinguish the coins, as well as to save material costs.
