485 Series "Resort Yamadori" 98822 TOMIX Train
■ In the late JNR era and after the privatization of JNR, a large number of passenger cars were converted for charter transport. These included 12 and 14 series seating cars originally used for charter services, and Kiha 58 series cars that became surplus after the discontinuation of express services. These were modified with observation rooms or tatami-matted seating, becoming what are known as "Joyful Trains." For passenger cars, by changing the locomotive, they could run on non-electrified or AC electrified sections. With an EF81 locomotive, they could travel on all electrified conventional lines between Honshu and Kyushu, allowing the "Joyful Trains" (JT) of each JR company to handle long-distance charter transport and tour services. However, from the late 1990s onwards, there were many disadvantages, such as a decline in charter transport and difficulties in arranging drivers for cross-company runs (JR Central stopped training drivers in the 2000s and only operated locomotives with drivers who had been employed since the JNR era). Consequently, JR East promoted the conversion of JTs to electric trains, leading to the creation of 485 series-based electric JTs in the 1990s, which replaced the passenger car JTs. "Resort Yamanami" was created by re-modifying the 485 series "Yamanami" and "Seseragi," which were originally born from this background, into a 6-car formation. The surplus leading cars from "Yamanami" were combined with surplus 485 series 3000 series cars to become "Zipang." However, due to the aging of the original 485 series parts and the difficulty in obtaining consumables, the train retired in 2022, its 11th year after modification. At the same time, the 485 series itself, which had reigned for a long time, also retired.
